Kununurra Youth Night Space Co-Design

Kununurra Night Space Co-Design Project is underway, bringing together local voices to shape a culturally safe, community-led after-hours space for young people.

Led by MG Corporation, Wunan  and Waringarri, with support from the  Kimberley Juvenile Justice Strategy, as part of the Department of Justice, the project will be  locally informed and grounded in Aboriginal voices.

Why it matters

Other Kimberley communities already have youth night spaces in Broome and Fitzroy Crossing , where the model has been well received with positive results . This initiative is a key election promise by the WA Labor Government and responds to strong calls from community to create safe, positive options for young people.

What’s happening?

  • Co-design, workshops and consultations will take place over the coming months. These sessions are open to community, and your input will be a big part of shaping the model and ensuring community engagement. Follow us on  Facebook for further details.
  • Co-Design Committee  will guide the process and make sure decisions reflect local aspirations. Alongside the three ACCOs, three community representatives  will be appointed through an Expression of Interest process (see details below). These roles will ensure lived experience and local knowledge are central to the design.

The vision

Together, we are asking: What does it mean to have a Kununurra Youth Night Space?
The answer will be developed
with and for young people  —ensuring they are safe, supported, and connected after hours.

How the process will work in the first six months:

Learning on Dawang

Learning on Dawang is a culturally grounded program supporting disengaged children ages 8-12 to reconnect with learning through On Country experiences and carer engagement.

Guided by Elders and local partners, the program builds strong identity, cultural pride, and pathways back into education.

Magic Memories Media

Led by B Visual Media, our Magic Memories Media Club gives young people the opportunity to learn photography, graphic design and some filmmaking skills, empowering their creative expression, building confidence and a sense of pride in their work and community.
