Our History

From Strong Foundations

Kununurra Waringarri Aboriginal Corporation (KWAC) began in 1979, responding to the immediate and practical needs of local Aboriginal people living on outstations and town reserves. In its early years, KWAC delivered essential services including mail delivery, generator refuelling, pension distribution, and supply runs to 23 outstations and three town reserves, ensuring people remained connected, supported and able to live on Country.

Over the decades, KWAC’s role has evolved alongside the community. As circumstances and needs changed, our focus shifted from primarily municipal-style services to a broader, more holistic approach centred on social, cultural, healing and community-led support.

Today, KWAC delivers a wide range of culturally grounded programs that strengthen families, support children and young people, promote wellbeing, and create safe, connected community spaces. This evolution reflects the resilience, leadership and strength of our people, and KWAC’s ongoing commitment to responding to community priorities in culturally informed and locally led ways.
