Coolamon Centre – Kununurra Youth Night Space

The Coolamon Centre, formerly known as the Kununurra Youth Night Space (KYNS), is a community-led, culturally safe after-hours space for young people in Kununurra.

Developed through more than 12 months of community co-design, the Centre provides young people with a safe and welcoming place after dark, with food, activities, practical support, trusted workers and safe transport.

Importantly, support extends beyond the night. Outreach and follow-up connect young people and their families with local services and support, creating stronger links between after-hours, daytime and family support.

The model was developed by KWAC, MG Corporation and Wunan Foundation, in partnership with Kimberley Juvenile Justice Services (KJJS) and the Department of Justice, and shaped by young people, families, Aboriginal leaders, local services and the broader Kununurra community.

Why Coolamon?:

The name Coolamon Centre was chosen following consultation with local Miriwoong cultural knowledge holders.

A coolamon is a vessel traditionally used to carry and protect what is precious. It represents care and responsibility, holding and carrying what matters.

The Coolamon Centre carries this meaning forward: supporting and caring for our young people and families as they move through their journey.

A connected community response:

The Coolamon Centre is more than a night space. It forms part of a connected approach that brings together after-hours support, outreach and follow-up, families and local services.

By working together, the aim is to respond earlier, strengthen relationships with young people and families, and connect them with the right support before issues reach crisis point.
